Hnefatafl, also known as Tafl or The King’s Table is a two-player board game dating from the warlike Viking Age. The origins of this Scandinavian game are dated back to approx. 400 A.D. It is a mufti-faceted strategy game that demands and fosters concentration and logical thinking and also brings some exciting entertainment.
The wooden square-chequered board is arranged in an 11 x 11 grid. The king’s fortress or throne is located at the centre of the board and cannot be entered by any other piece than the king himself. The king, surrounded by his entourage of 12 white guards, is under siege and must attempt to elude the 24 black besiegers in order to reach the safety of one of the refuge forts situated at each corner of the board. These squares are also solely reserved for the king.
The board has Norse knot patterns. A light-coloured wood (ash) was selected to leave room for individual customisation.
The set includes a total of 37 playing pieces in a drawstring bag made of leather.
The game also includes an illustrated, very detailed manual in German, English and French.
Safety Note:
Caution - Not suitable for children under 36 months due to small parts that can be swallowed, choking hazard.
