Viking Sword Type Petersen H, Various Blade Lengths, Without Sheath
(Practical Blunt), SK-B
This combat Viking sword was developed in close cooperation with fencing and martial arts instructor Volker Kunkel and his West-Coast-Institute. Sadly, Volker did not live to see the market launch of this small series as he passed away in April 2021.
The objective was to offer a sturdy yet light, well-balanced combat-ready sword at an affordable price. Volker contributed his many years of experience as a fencing teacher, coach and travelling merchant on Medieval markets to the making of this sword.
Based on original 9th-10th c. examples found in Birka, Sweden, and classified as Type H/I according to Petersen’s Viking sword typology, it features a blade forged out of spring steel, which has been oil-hardened and tempered to a Rockwell hardness of approx. 48-52 HRC. The very wide fuller makes it both flexible and lightweight. The sword comes with approx. 2 - 2.5 mm thick edges and a rounded, relatively broad tip, which makes it eligible for stage combat.
Like many surviving historical examples of the time, the triangular pommel is a two-part construction: The blade's full tang is anchored to the lower section, and the pommel cap is secured to the base by means of two rivets.
This sword is available with two different blade lengths ( short = 64 cm / long = 74 cm). The short version is particularly ideal as a beginner's sword for fencers.
Leather scabbards with sword belt (product no. ULF-SW-11SA or ULF-SW-11SB) are available separately.
