Hats and Hoods
Viking Hood, Skjoldehamn, various colours
The look and cut of this hood is based on an archaeological find dated between the 10th and 12th century. In 1936, a fully clothed bog body was discovered on a farm in Skjoldehamn, Norway, and the characteristic of the hood found on the body are the pointed hem with an inset square piece on the chest.
This gugel/hood is mainly composed of rectangular panels. It has a small cord in the neck which allows for individual adjustment. The gugel/hood is worn like a separate hood and just covers the shoulders. It is made of 100% cotton canvas and is therefore not waterproof. However, a certain water-repellent effect can be achieved with a little waterproofing spray.
If you want to be historically accurate, the gugel did not strictly speaking belong in the Viking era. But it is often worn by both men and women to complete their Viking costume. This hood is also a nice addition for all other Early to High Medieval costumes.
