This calf-length tabard made of cotton fabric has a straight cut and is open at the sides. There are ties on the sides of the tabard to fasten the garment or to adjust for a better fit. The appliqued yellow fabric in the shape of an arrow on a blue background makes the tabard stand out
The tabard (also called a surcoat , weapons dress , tappert or surcot ) emerged in the 12th century and was worn by knights over their armour or chain mail. It protected the wearer from the sun on the battlefield, and the various colour combinations made it clear in the heat of battle who was on which side.
There are numerous depictions of Medieval tabard's, for example in the Maciejowski Bible (also known as the Crusader Bible ), a Medieval illustrated Bible from the 13th century, and in the Codex Manesse, a hymn manuscript from the early 14th century.
The simple, straight cut is typical of the tabard. To finish the look combine with a leather belt.
