Hats and Hoods
Medieval Hood with Long Tail
A hood made of a light cotton fabric which has a long tail (also called liripipe). Due to the long tip, it lends itself to the High and Late Middle Ages.
Characteristic of the Gugel in general is its hood, which also covers the shoulders. The cowl was first worn by the Vikings. In the High Middle Ages it was part of the everyday clothing of farmers, craftsmen and travellers. From the 14th century onwards, the cowl became a fashionable accessory - the fit became tighter, the tip longer and the hem was often decorated. From the 16th century onwards it was rarely used.
