Medieval Doublet with Braided Cords - Black

A body-hugging doublet which is made from a cotton twill and finished with contrasting details. The centre front is fastened with a wine-red cord. There are also red cords on the sleeve hem and on the bottom edge. With the cords on the bottom edge hoes can be attached directly to the doublet. The doublet is lined with a light, contrasting cotton fabric. 

The doublet appeared in the High Middle Ages and replaced the long and wide tunic. It was combined with trousers or hoes, which were attached directly to the doublet using cords.

 The doublet was initially worn as a high-necked under jacket. During the Renaissance, the neckline became deeper and the doublet became more richly decorated.
A light shirt or camisole was usually worn under the doublet.
There are numerous depictions of doublets from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, for example in the Codices Palatini Germanici 466.
