The Romans are known to have used ideas of weapons from their enemies. Initially they used weapons of the Etruscan and Greek style and they also took equipment from the Celts.
Once a weapon was taken it was standard. The weapons changed over the history of Rome, and their equipment and uses were never individual. Almost all Roman swords and daggers were double-edged, and could be used for both cutting and threading. The Pugio was a small dagger used by the ancient Roman soldiers probably as an auxiliary weapon. Like other pieces of equipment of the Legionnaires, the dagger had a series of changes throughout I century. It generally had a long blade, was leaf-shaped, between 18 and 28 centimetres long and 5 centimetres or more across. It was ideal for threading; a good thrust could pierce chainmail..
