Long-sleeved Medieval Dress  Cotehardine Ava, Brown or Wine Red

"cotehardie (plural cotehardies) (historical)  unisex garment tailored to fit the torso and arms, usually with a row of buttons down the front as well as down each fitted sleeve from the elbow to the wrist."

This long medieval dress is tight cut and made of cotton fabric (canvas). The skirt has part mitres (fabric wedges) which produce a generous seam width. The front centre of the dress is fastened with a cotton cord and can be adjusted. The cord ends are finished with a point so they can be easily threaded through the embroidered eyelets.

The cut of the dress is based on medieval representations from the 13th century. Before the 13th C, the woman's robe was cut rather loose to hide the body form, but then clothing became more tight fitting to the body shape.Typical style for a Cotehardine are the laces or the buttons at the front centre. Laces and buttons only appeared in the 13th C and made a tighter fit possible. The ever-expanding neckline was characteristic of these medieval dresses and were very popular with the ladies. The Cotehardine was worn with a slip, veil and a narrow belt.

Representations of a cotehardine from the time can be found, for example. in the Book of Hours of the Duke of Berry in the Juniper Journal or in the book of simple medicine (Virgo and Unicorn) illustrated by Robinet Testard.
