This calf-length tabard is made of strong cotton canvas and it is fully lined. The bodice is straight-cut to the waist, while the skirt is flared and features a centre slit. The chequerboard colour scheme (MiParti) and the appliquéd fleurs-de-lis give the surcoat its distinctive look.

The tabard (also known as a surcoat , surcoat , or military coat ) originated in the 12th century and was worn by knights over their armour or chain mail. It protected the wearer from the sun on the battlefield, and the various colour combinations clearly distinguished friend from enemy in the heat of battle. The fleur-de-lis is both a symbol of the French monarchy and a Christian emblem. In French contexts, the fleur-de-lis is often depicted in blue and gold.  A simple, straight cut is typical of the tabard. To give the surcoat a more defined waist, it is recommended pairing it with a leather belt.
