The Katzbalger sword is a short single handed battle sword of the Renaissance. It was the preferred weapon of mercenary soldiers during the 15th and 16th centuries. The sword has a comparatively short wide blade and an S-shaped hand guard. There are two possible linguistic origins for the name. Either it refers to cat leather which may have been used for the hilt or sheath. More probably however, the origin is the word "katzbalgen" which is a synonym for brawling or tussling.
Katzbalger were often used by archers or pikemen as a last defence, when the opponent was too close for their long range weapons.
The tip of our replica is rounded and the cutting edge is 2 mm. This sword is suitable for reenactment training and light sword play. We can not however guarantee that there will be no breakage.
The wooden hilt, the steel pommel and hand forged cross guard have all been very solidly manufactured. The blade has total of three fullers.
