Carbon Steel Practice Swords
The Katzbalger sword is a short single handed battle sword of the Renaissance. It was the preferred weapon of mercenary soldiers during the 15th and 16th centuries. The sword has a comparatively short wide blade and an S-shaped hand guard. There are two possible linguistic origins for the name. Either it refers to cat leather which may have been used for the hilt or sheath. More probably however, the origin is the word "katzbalgen" which is a synonym for brawling or tussling.
Katzbalger were often used by archers or pikemen as a last defence, when the opponent was too close for their long range weapons.
