This helmet is based on the great helmet of Sir Richard Pembridge, who died in 1375. The origin is now in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. The crosses at the bottom of the helmet in the front were used as attachment points for chains. These helped to prevent the helmet from being dislodged if it was struck by a lance. This was a common style in the 14th century. Another well known example is the helmet of Edward the Black Prince, who faought alongside Sir Richard at the battle of Poiters, France, in 1356. It was worn over a cerveliere' and mail coif. This item is supplied with a well padded linen liner sewn into the inside of the helmet. It is constructed from 2mm steel.
