The light and the efficient – this is what the Gladius was known as among ancient Roman army. It was the principal sidearm as it could be efficiently used in any close combat situation. Pompeii was one of the later versions. For a deeper analysis, “What the Soldiers Wore on Hadrian’s Wal”, a book by Russell Robinson can be consulted. In this version of Pompeii the curvature was eliminated and the point was diminished. However, it was equally effective and easy to produce. Made of high carbon steel, this replica has a turned ash and maple handle.
The Gladius has a matching wooden scabbard with leather cover and brass applications.
